New “Playground” for Entrepreneurs

by Mark Evans on November 26th, 2006

Here’s something different and pretty intriguing: an “indoor playground” in downtown Toronto for “creative people who want to make a difference in [high-tech] industry and within Toronto”. Created by Mark Dowds and Bobby John, the playground is 2,000 sq. feet “where great ideas and ventures are birthed. We want the new entrepreneurs and start-ups in the area to feel like it is a safe place and a home to hang their hat.” As far as I can tell, there’s really nothing like this idea in Toronto, which needs a place where entrepreneurs can gather to exchange ideas and hang out. If you look at how many people go to DemoCamp, BarCamp, the PR Meet-Up and the mesh-up, it illustrates how excited people are these days and their interest in hearing from and talking to other people in the industry. (Hat tip to Rob Hyndman for put the spotlight on the playground). Austin Hill is also intrigued by the idea of the playground, which sees as a key way to nurture start-ups in Canada.

This is a fantastic idea. Given the reception at the netus meetup it is obvious that Toronto needs a shared facility like this. Do you have any idea how much membership will be?

[…] Two Toronto area VCs, Mark Dowds and Bobby John, are opening what they call an “Indoor Playground”. This hotbed of resources, creative minds, and an entrepreneurial setting was created to help spark creativity within the Toronto tech community. This local ‘hang-out’ will facilitate the exchange of ideas and form a catalyst for many. I really look forward to seeing the evolution of this hub and how it comes to fruition. […]

Thank you for the post. We are really excited about the Indoor Playground. It is beginning to shape up and it looks like we could get some more creativity flowing between some of the new start-ups in the City.
