Social Shopping Site for Chicks

by Mark Evans on September 21st, 2006

One of the more interesting parts of the whole social networking phenomena is how shopping services/sites are emerging where people can share their views/opinions/recommendations about retailers, products and services. Canadian women interested in tapping into this trend may want to check out ChickAdvisor.com, which is just about to show its stripes after being in development for the past 18 months. Alex de Bold, who created ChickAdvisor with his wife, Ali, said the site is a combination of “Trip Advisor meets Digg“, which at the very least is an intriguing proposition. In addition to being a destination for recommendations, comments, etc., ChickAdvisor also offers tools to create lists and blog, as well as links to affiliated e-commerce sites such as Amazon. ChickAdvisor aims to make money in three ways: advertising, affiliate relationships and local paid advertising through pay-per-click and pay-per-call. de Bold said he is encouraged by NBC’s recent strategic decision to embrace iVillage as its vehicle to do social networks. “I’m here saying ‘awesome’,” he said. “They want to grow it by five times in revenue over the next three years”. Among ChickAdvisor’s competition for the hearts and minds of Canadian women is Sweetspot.ca, which recently sold a minority stake to Rogers Communications Inc. Update: Here’s Ali de Bold’s post on Chick Advisor on Red Canary.

[…] You have probably seen and participated in some of the plethora of these Web 2.0-ey sites for women and shopping, but I wanted to tell you about one you might not have discovered yet - Chick Advisor. Admittedly, I haven’t spent a lot of time at any of these sites, mostly because I just am flat out too busy, but I found this one earlier in the fall from my friend and co-worker, Mark Evans and thought you might like to know about it. [What Mr. Man Tech Mark Evans is doing perusing beauty sites is another article entirely. ] […]
